Steven D. Hoffman is a former president and current member of the Sunnyvale-Cupertino Bar Association. He has been serving the needs of individuals and businesses in Silicon Valley since 1981. With prior experience as a real estate agent and broker, escrow holder for the sale of businesses and employed in the land use and environmental divisions of the Los Angeles City Attorney's office, Mr. Hoffman is uniquely qualified to serve clients in the area of Real Estate, Business Law and Personal Injury.
Mr. Hoffman was raised in Santa Clara County and has witnessed the changing nature of the valley over the past half century. At an early age he worked at his father's "working man's" clothing store located on the corner of Post and Market Streets in downtown San Jose.
While attending Willow Glen High School in San Jose, he worked for a number of canneries, in various capacities, and joined his first union, (Warehouseman's Union) and learned the value of hard work. During his college years, he became an apprentice carpenter, was first exposed to the construction industry, became acquainted with construction practices and joined his second union (Carpenter's Union).
During his undergraduate work at UCB, Mr. Hoffman sharpened his psychology and communication skills while volunteering at Napa State Mental Hospital establishing communication with patients on the acute psychiatric ward.
Mr. Hoffman earned his real estate license and worked for a large residential real estate company while attending law school,. During his seven years in Los Angeles, he learned what it takes to "farm" a neighborhood, and bridge the gap that often existed between buyers and sellers of residential properties in order to close a deal. Ultimately, Mr. Hoffman earned his broker's license and formed his own company in the 80's targeting the Commercial and Industrial market.
Also, while in Los Angeles, Mr. Hoffman gained invaluable experience while working in various divisions of the Los Angeles City Attorney's office. For example, while with the Land Use division, he worked on drafting a City-wide Adult Entertainment Ordinance, and while with the Environmental division, he worked on state-wide legislation to implement water conservation. This work and routine attendance at City Council meetings provided the experience necessary to assist clients with obtaining governmental approval and addressing requirements for such things as lot line adjustments and building permit issues.
In 1981 Mr. Hoffman established his law practice at the "cross-roads" of Stevens Creek and DeAnza Blvd. in Cupertino and has been practicing in Cupertino ever since.
During his first 10 years of practice, Mr. Hoffman's office held escrow and administered the sale of hundreds of Santa Clara County businesses involving bulk sale transfers and secured transactions.
His practice areas now range from business formation/organization and real estate transactional work to litigation, including construction defect cases. Mr. Hoffman is also uniquely qualified to assist in the sale of businesses, residential and commercial properties.
